_hands_ is an interactive performance in which the performer wears gardening gloves retrofitted with an accelerometer and a light sensor to create an abstract audiovisual experience. Using Pure Data, an Edirol V-4 video mixer, and a video synthesizer, I programmed a system that gradually shifts the brightness of a video image from underexposure to overexposure. During the performance, the gloves interrupt this process by displacing the system's internal timer. Triggered by the light detected by one hand, this displacement advances or delays the gradual exposure cycle. A monitor displaying the generated video serves as a light source, creating a feedback loop between the performer and the system. The accompanying sound is generated in Pure Data and synthesized in real time from data collected by the gloves, which modulate additive and FM synthesis algorithms.
